A wiring mess!!

Well, this may be a hard one. I’ve had my interior lights stuck on high and thought there was a problem with my dimmer switch. Which there was. It seems that the PO had rewired the dimmer lights because the switch had failed. He bypassed the switch completely and hard wired the interior lights to work full bright all the time. Besides being stupid (why they didn’t put a used switch in I’ll never know) the idiot who did it cut the wires so I can’t read the markings to determine how to reconnect to a new wiring harness so I can put a new switch in. I tried to rewire the harness, guessing on the correct connections, but now the lights are very dim. When I move the dimmer switch they get a bit brighter but are still very dim. Obviously I have either connected the wires wrong or my used switch is corroded. Any ideas on the correct way to connect? Sadly I don't think a wiring diagram will help as the numbers marked on the wires have been cut and there are several wires that are the same color (2 large green, 2 brown- the rest I can figure out). I may have to hard wire again and live with the full bright interior lights. Any ideas?
