Is your alternator light in the dash coming on? (red battery symbol) If so, then yes, it's likely your alternator, and even more likely, just the brush pack/regulator of the aleternator. That's a fairly easy replacement and cheap. If it's the alternator itself (bearings or diodes, etc..) that gets quite a bit more expensive. The alternator has little to do with the starting system, other than the fact that if it can't recharge the battery while you're driving, soon you won't have enough juice to restart. If the car started normally, and you only got 1/4 mile before it died, the problem is not your alternator. That's not enough time for the battery to drain to the point of killing the engine. What are you reading on the EDU voltmeter in the dash? If your alternator is out, you'll know, as the voltage will drop below 12V, think below about 10V or so things go all wacky and that's about when the engine will start to shut down. :) Or is that 11V ?
Now you are saying you took of the negative battery cable while the car was running?? If so, WHY?? Obviously the car is going to die if you do that, because you just took away the power from the entire electrical system! No fuel injection, no ignition, no nothing! If disconnecting the battery didn't kill a running engine, then I'd start to worry..
Doesn't sound like an alternator problem to me, but as always, we need more info about what's going on! Look for the symptoms I mentioned, pay particular close attention to the voltmeter on the EDU and the battery light in the dash. If your voltage is around 13V or higher with the engine running (closer to or slightly above 14V with all accessories and lights off), your alternator is probably ok.
