Well, I just finished soldering in new bulbs in almost every damn switch I have. Yes, the green cover needs to be removed by unsoldering the ends. The bulb is fitted into the green cover and the wire ends are wrapped around the two tongue-like ends that the green cover slides over. Remove the solder from those ends and slide off the green cover. It takes a bit of effort but the cover wont slide off unless most or all of solder is removed. Good luck.
