Crazy as it may sound, I have confirmed that the spring is actually broken. It broke about two coils up from the bottom and the upper part of the spring then slipped over the edge of the cup and is resting on the tire. The break is on a diagonal rather than perpendicular to the spring. I didn't notice anything wrong until I backed out of the garage a few days ago. I could hear the rubbing noise and at first thought a chunk of ice was lodged in the wheel well and rubbing on the tire. On jacking it up it was obvious what the problem was. I called a local garage that works on imports and was told that a new spring would cost $175. He also said that the springs come in "different colors". Anybody know what that is all about? He also said that the front end should be aligned after installing the spring. True or false? The total damage to my wallet would come to about $315.
