Ugh...the dreaded limp home mode. It happened to me on two different 400- mile trips home from upstate New York! When you go into limp mode, the electronic throttle ceases to work, and it's then controlled by a physical cable, I believe....hence the heavy pedal. My mechanic said I would not hurt my car ('92 9kt manual) by driving it in limp mode, so, to the car's credit, it got me home both times. The first time was on a Sunday, in the middle of nowhere, 350 miles from home. I kissed the ground when I reached my driveway. The second time it happened, I was pissed, but I wasn't terrified since I knew I would make it home.
Anyway, we replaced that TCS bleeder valve on the firewall. My mechanic has the SAAB diagnostic computer, so he reset the system and all was well, until it happened again. An ETS fault code kept reappearing that indicated a problem in the ETS ECU under the driver's seat. We replaced that unit nearly a year ago, and it has been fine ever since.
Sometimes it's a nagging little problem like a valve, and sometimes it's big, like the ECU (got a used one for $400, which is better than $800 from the dealer).
Anyway, good luck. I assure you that many here, myself included, sympathize with you!
