I have used the engine flushes before but with mixed results. The do indeed work. The do free up alot of crud in the engine. Most I have seen say you need to start with a cold engine. Dump it in and let it idle for somewhere around 5min. NO DRIVING!
The stuff you drain out is extremely thin and generally very black. I have had mixed results in that I seem to see alot of gasket leaking in used cars that have recently done the home flush. As a side not the recently changed oil also looks very dark for just being changed. I would consider a double oil change if you go this route. Do you have a reason for flushing then engine such as lifter tick etc? A nice synthetic will usually cure lifter tick. My experience with swapping to synthetic oils with mileage tends to be that the first couple of oil changes need to be fairly quick just by the color of the oil. The synthetic appears to pick up some of the crud.
