I have had several sets of RE-92's on my Subaru's. Yes, the Subaru groups complain endlessly about the tire. Mainly because they are not a performance tire despite Bridgestones ploy that they are. The sidewalls are very soft giving a comfortable ride. They do decent in the snow and when they were half worn on our RS last winter I swapped to dedicated snows. I did not find that the studded snows were that much better even on ice. We do alot of skiing in the NW and the RE-92 never left me stranded. Our last Subaru made it 32K before my wife wiped out the sidewalls on two of them. They were nearly gone at that point. With the best being around 4/32". Our RS now has 35K on it's original set and they are all at 5/32. My brother had the Toyo FZ4's and they were a good compromise leaning towards performance rather than all season. He felt they were a bit shortlived but being a 17" tire on a Eagle Talon TSi I don't think he had alot to complain about. I would probably not buy them again as I now have a set of snows and they are very expensive locally. The Toyo T1's are cheaper around town than the RE-92's. Have you considered the Yokohama Advan's?
