As some of you who have helped me (Thank You) know, My fuel pump bit the dust about a week and a half ago. I bought the electric pump unit for about $80 from Cybertroll and thought that it wourl be a one day fix. I've been having an impossible time getting off the ring, everything I tried as suggested by several people failed, including giant pliers, vise grips and a big pipe for leverage. In fact, the only thing I accomplished was breaking off about 1/4 of the inside teeth of the ring. Finally today I said "screw it, I'm gettin this thing off". Replacement part is only $17 from my local dealer and it's worth it to get rid of this thing. Using a dremel I cut through 1 inch sections of the ring for about 1/4 of the entire ring, then using a standard screw driver and hammer, pried out the one inch pieces. This gave the rest of the ring enough flexability for me to beat (not tap, too stuck) it around with the hammer and the pipe to finally get it off. The whole operation has taken me several hours, I never would have thought that a simple piece of plastic with only 4 threads would have been such a bear to remove. Once I got it off I thought "Great, I'm home free..remove the assembly, put in the new pump and put on a new ring and I'll be back in business." But NOOOOOOooooo. I pulled the fuel pump assembly out of the tank carefully (which is a little tricky) and discovered this to my horror..

The pump had not just up and died. It had actually shorted out inside the gas tank, melting through part of the upper receiver and burning completely through the wire's insullation. I can only say I'm very thankful that a spark or heat from this didn't ignite the fumes in the gas tank. Especially because when I was testing to see what the problem was with the car, my wife was in the driver's seat and my face was no more than a couple inches from the pump.
Now that I've said my prayers, the question is what to do with this dang thing. I have the electrical pump unit (brand new) but the upper part of the assembly and the wire needs to be replaced. Can I find this anywhere without getting the whole assembly? On top of that I need a new screw ring, O ring (advised to replace) and pressure line one way valve/connector (because it snapped where it meets the plastic hose). This is turning out to be one of those "easy jobs" that turns into a nightmare. The sad thing is that with all this misfortune and hassle, it'll still cost me half of what it would to take it to the dealer to get it fixed (towing, new assembly, labor...).
Thoughts?
TIA,
Jason
