Well, I got some good tinkering done today. Boy do I need a Haynes guide.
I found the switch for the backup-lights on the transmission of my 86 9KT 5speed (thanks to the information on this BB.) By taking it out and giving it a good cleaning I got the lights to work again, but only temporarily. Also, when trying to test it, I noticed my radio got staticy each time I shifted into reverse. Time for a new switch?
Also: right next to the switch for the backup-lights, is another switch or sensor. Instead of pointing towards the wheels, it points towards the hood. What is this switch or sensor for? I took it out, and it looked quite similar to the other one.
And a question about the transmission oil: I finally found the transmission's fill-plug. (I think... On the back of the transmission, on a mostly level ledge, not far from where the gear-shifter enters -- a short, hollowed-out 19mm-headed flange bolt with a little flat washer? Is there anything else it could have been?)
I took the bolt off, and I could see the oil level! It had been filled to the brim!!
I haven't felt any problems so far, and I don't know how long it's been like that. (I've had the car for only 2 months.) I would have thought this would be a disaster.
Am I just extremely lucky? Is it really not so bad to over-fill? Is this sucking up gas mileage and power at the very least? On looking at old service records, the previous owner did put in the car's 3rd clutch less than a year before I bought, it at roughly 140000 miles, and there was a comment that the old clutch was oil-soaked. Is this related?
Thanks in advance.
