I'd think drilling the mount is a fairly easy thing to do. Try incremental changes...
Drill 3 or 4 holes first, see what happens. The good news is that you have SUCH an obvious problem that you should be able to determine if you've met the objective in next to no time.
Remember: if you drill too many, you can't fill them in.
Also, RE: Haydraulic v. solid lower mounts: I'm told that after the 89 or 90 MY, the ONLY mounts are hydraulic. Too bad, too because the solids are a LOT cheaper than the "bag of grease" types.
