You've described the connector as "a typical phone connector " which is usually a 2-pair RJ-11. I think (just guessing here from working on several in-car Cell phones, spec. Motorola) that it is a FOUR-pair connector, RJ-45. (Like an Ethernet jack) and this is typically the connector for the multifunction handset. My dad's ancient Samsung phone had the same thing.
This connector/handset may be similar enough across the board to buy a handset and try it, though the risks are damaging what's in the car and the handset if I'm insane.
You can use Google to search for used cell phones, and typically those old Motorola bag-phones are cheap. Coincidentally, most of these are the car-phones with a NiCad battery underneath them! (Sony camcorder NT-1 battery, easy as pie to find replacements.) I have quickly adapted these bag phones to work in a car with nothing much more than the goose neck to hold the handset in a good place, a longer antenna wire, and a window-mount antenna.
Last but not least, most phones can have MULTIPLE phone numbers assigned to them, though sharing is beyond my experience. Probably, if it CAN be done, someone will do it for cash.
