The 9000 has just a whole lot more to go wrong on it than a 900. A 900S with lo-miles is an ideal car especially if you do it yourself.
Arguably, the 900 might even have better survivability, but that's probably open to learned debate. (The 900 has an enormous front-crumple zone, nearly double the lenght of any other car on the road today. Lenght=time=energy dissipated in any simplistic comparison.)
I've had them both, and the 900 is the delightful end of the "true" or idiosyncratic Saab designs, and has some real charm.
All that being said, though, I truly love the 9000s. You need to sit in one of each and decide. Get your intellectual info all in place, get some possible buys lined up, then just do a "sit." Let's face it, the heart seals the deal.
