Years ago, I installed an optical ignition on my first 99, a '76. It worked fine.
The thing today is the Pertronix Ignitor. It's an electronic module that replaces standard points & uses the same wiring. I believe it has a Hall sensor that senses the lobes on the distributor shaft that would normally open and close your points.
Sonett and Vintage Saabers use them frequently.
OTOH, if you have the 78-81 electronic ignition, they're pretty reliable, from what I've heard.
