Thank you for all the responses. This is a 1976 99 GL BTW.
I have never repacked or replaced the bearings. I have replaced the panhard rubber bushings before, fairly recently, but I will recheck those. The knocking is clearly coming from the hub - it just feels loose. It knocks as I wiggle it - if I grab the tire at the top and pull/push in the direction of the axle. Both sides are similar in noise and in looseness, but the driver's side is looser.
I was thinking about just retorqueing the nut, and then backing off to that really low final torque (thanks for confirming that DougM) and see if it tightens things up.
Just to confirm, if I'm repacking - that means I'm removing the bearings, which means I'm pressing them in and out, right? If so, it may be easier to just replace bearings while I'm in there.
Anything else I should look for? If I have the wheel off the ground, it should spin freely with no noise, right?
