idle problem

Since I bought my '73 99 automatic almost a year ago, I still have not been able to cure a nasty idle problem. The car has one Zenith Stromberg carb. Idle rpm is not constant and fluctuates several hundreds or more. Also, when braking to stop or to take a bend, when I take my foot of the gas pedal, rpm drop that low that the motor (almost) stalls. The same happens when idling and I hit the gas pedal once. After it almost stalls, rpm go up again by themselves.
The ignition system has been checked and doublechecked and found to be in orde, including vacuum advance and centrifugal advance. I even tried a new SU HIF44 carb, but the problem remained. A new fuel pump didn't help either. The inlet manifold has been flattened. I get the impression as if the carb piston goes down too fast, question however is why? The car also has an LPG-system. Interesting thing is that idle rpm on LPG is as constant as can be. Who can help?
