You are welcome, Dan.
The 93 S is definitely more comfortable to drive, and quieter for the 5th gear, and hydraulic motor mounts. - By all means, take the 99 for a test drive. You may still love it.
Years ago, I bought a 995door( loved the shape) yet I hadn't owned a B engine in a long time, and simply bought the car, bought a reciprocating saw, yanked the B engine(bad waterpump) out without ever firing it, and introduced the reciprocating saw to the firewall.
After squeezing the 16valve turbo 5speed(talk about tight) in there,I took the car for a test run, and apparently the engine was not mounted correctly, for it would shift and rock, as I drove the car. Long story short, I ended up junking the car.
A few years later, while walking in Manhattan; I spotted another 78 GLE- a pretty coral white.. Well the owner wanted a ridiculous price for the car: so I simply walked away, yet left him my number.
A few months later, owner called-the automatic transmission went. I bought the car for 500.00, vowed to not do a 16valve transplant. I mated a four speed transmission: and I was simply amazed at the car's performance.
No hesitation, smooth like butter, and quick! It was a low mileage B, and the performance was so good, it would leave a turbo with ease.
Long story short: timing chain went(ignored the maintenance) and the car sat around for years, and finally- I was forced to junk it. The older
If you like the shape of a 99, and are willing to do the maintenance, research, hunting for spare parts, etc: it just may be for you.
On the other hand, if you pay someone to do a 16valve engine transplant, along with the fuel injection, wiring, etc- then you have a 900 in 99- thus a younger man in an older man clothes,
Best
