gear selection pattern missing??

Hi All,
Can anyone here tell me wheter there should be a gear selection pattern inside the gearshift lever housing? I bought a 5 speed transmission modified to fit a b-engined 99. Only when I unscrewed the housing, there wasn't any pattern there. So when seperated from the gearbox the lever can be moved freely. Is this normal or should i go and find/make a new pattern. Could a 4 speed pattern be modified into a 5 speed pattern?
Thanks in advance!
Niels
