Hi all...

Finally, some good news regarding Nils, the '72 99!

Took the original radiator to Greenwood Radiator the other day for a pressure & leak test. The unit turned out to be leak-free and passed a 15-lb pressure test (based on a 13-lb system). He also was threw a coat of paint on it.

I asked the mechanic why he tested at 15 el-bees.

He told me that the Saab was tested slightly over a range based on the age of the car and the condition of the radiator. Newer cars (much newer), he'll test at roughly 18...older cars with less-stable rads will be tested at much less than 13 lbs.

I also asked about re-coring, but when told the quote based on the high cost of brass and copper, I decided against it.

Any thoughts on the pressure testing? I did read about flipping the input and output & adding a tank from a 900, but I'm going to stay stock for now.

Regarding the radiator's fan, I noticed that the motor has some play whether or not it's attached to the fan shroud. The movement is best described as rotating slightly (1/4"+) on the X-axis, with zero movement on the Y-axis (up & down) & Z-axis (side to side). I hope that description makes sense.

It's as if the motor assembly was designed that way...with some play.

The mechanic felt that there would be a problem w/ that much play if the car were a Honda or a Ford, but he wasn't sure with a Saab.
Fair enough. :-) Meanwhile, the fan spins freely.

Sorry for the length. My thought is that both units will be fine (assuming everything else checks OK).

Doug: Did you install an extra fan next to the original on the rad w/ modification on your '73?? Or did you just add a switch to manually control the original? Now that I look, it seems that only one fan could go on the rad.

Thanks to all...
