The 8-tooth sets seem to see far fewer failures than the later 12-tooth sets.
If you swap in an early one (correct me if I'm wrong) you also need to switch the oil pump, distributor, and water pump drive shafts along with it.
Keeping matched sets together is always the way to go since the meshing teeth wear into each other, but good condition parts can be interchanged in a pinch.
