Years ago, there was no rubber in the coupling. Somehow I acquired one of them from an old stash of 99 parts. It looked a lot like a 3/8" universal joint for a socket set. When the rubber one on my 1980 99 gave out on me (on the NJ Turnpike... Managed to get it into 3rd gear, and get home...), I replaced the two rubber parts with that one. Never another shifting problem!
Too bad they are NLA...
