Guys:
I am in need of a steering rack for my 1978 Saab 99GL Combi Coupe. The rack housing/casing is cracked and leaks badly enough to need topping off with fluid once every 100 miles or so.
Anyone know where I might find this component? I currently live in southern Orange County, California, and have twice tried contacting Paul Vail at Absolute Saab in San Diego County, but he is apparently in an extended medical recovery and does not answer his phone in person.
About five years ago, I spoke with Skip Schott in Snohomish, Washington, who was featured on the Saab Automobile Company historical documentary broadcast several years back on History International Channel (great show, by the way, and I have a DVD of it that I recorded). At that time I did not ask him about needing this part, since the problem did not manifest itself until later. However, Skip had then told me his brother (I believe) was maintaining their Saab salvage yard and would have many vintage Saab parts available.
Anyway, any lead on this issue would be greatly appreciated!
I intend to try and keep this car going beyond my lifetime.
Gary S. – Thanks again for encouraging me last summer with your recommendations on getting her to pass California’s smog test! I enjoy driving her around locally, as she gets a lot of heads turned – merely because most other motorists have never seen one of these cars before, and there are not that many left that are still being driven regularly.
Thanks again, everyone!
