To clarify my earlier point - both early (77 and earlier) and late (78 and later) reservoirs are a single plastic unit, but the early ones have 2 caps - one for clutch and one for brake - and the two systems are completely separate. The late ones have only one cap and both clutch and brake are fed from the common fluid supply. So, if a 76 car has only one cap then the brake master and reservoir have been replaced somewhere along the line and you may be subject to the issue of the closed fluid nipple I mentioned in my previous post.
