Overheating Saab 99 - running a little hot

Hi fellow Saab enthusiasts!
I have a 1977 Saab 99 GL 4-door that runs a little bit too hot, especially in nose-to-tail town traffic. I've had repair work done but it still happens. The radiator was removed, pressure tested and repaired, the thermostat replaced and engine block plugs replaced, but it still overheats.
Does anybody have the same problem? Do water pumps often go wrong, or partially stop working in your experience? I have to top the water up about once a month so I guess there is a very slow leak, but it overheats more just after I've topped up the water. Strange?!?!
I've just taken the interior out of a 1980 Saab 900 which has fitted perfectly into my car, but the cooling system is very different so I couldn't take that as well.
It would be great to hear from anyone who can help. I've had the car for three years and it's been completely reliable. The first owner had it for the first 24 years before I bought it.
Look forward to any helpful comments.
Thanks for this website!!!
Iain.
