Hello george. The driver is the part bolted to the transmission that the axles go into. There is the cup and the housing. The housing don't really go bad but you have to remove the whole thing to separate the housing from the cup. The cups wear causing play between the tripod bearing setup attached to the end of the axle. Some times the bearing goes south but I've always found the driver to be the initiator of bearing destruction, and not the other way around. Both mishaps more than likely stem from a lack of grease in the driver cups.
