It is fairly easy job to pull the speedometer. After getting it out, take it to a speedometer repair shop who has heard of VDO. You could try speedomemter.com, I never have, but they at least know what a Saab is.
After removing the front pad (3 screws), there are 4 screws that hold in the instrument cluster. Remove the wires from the back and the cluster is in your hands. Then you can remove the speedometer from the cluster and take it in or send it out. I think its worth fixing; I like having documented high mileage, and I like the trip meter.
