All internal combustion engines need to advance ignition timing as engine speed and load increases. Advancing the timing compensates for a constant mixture burn time. A given air/fuel mixture takes x amount of time to burn regardsless of RPM. So to maintain the same burn time we advance the ignition time as the engine speed increases. Vacuum advance is to compensate for slower burn times at partial throttle conditions. Leaner mixtures take longer to burn, so we need to ignite them earlier.
Engine knocking occurs when the ignition time is too advanced and the maximum combustion pressure occurs before TDC which esstianlly attempts to push the piston in the opposite direction. Also, for turbos, as boost pressure increases the mixture is quicker (denser) to burn and the timing needs to less advanced.
