You could remove the rear beam. It looks like there are no welds holding it in place. but it is glued using the same stuff you'd find under the hood where the inner and outer come together. I bet a propane torch would soften it enough to break it free. Then you could just drill some holes in it and spot it to your roof. Your only issue would be to make darn sure it is in the right spot before welding it in.
Looking at the underside of my 78T's roof, I would think 4" front and back would be enough, but you'd have to be pretty precise on the sides. The sunroof mounting/opening for the front is actually a separate unit attached to the underside of the roof, and most likely glued in also, plus the folded over metal from the outer roof locks that panel in around the opening. The sides of this panel get pretty close to the outer edges of the roof, so you might have to cut pretty close to the drip rail. The only problem I see there is having enough room to weld, grind your welds, do filler work.
The last issue to consider is welding heat. If you warp the roof while welding, you could create an oil can effect < I call it a wee-wah panel. Trying to do filler work while the panel is constantly flexing/moving is not fun. To keep the heat down you could use 100's of small tack welds, staggering the whole way around till you make it solid. I would also keep a damp rag handy to cool the weld after each tack. Very time consuming doing it this way, but it would be better than trying to deal with a warped roof afterwards.
I looked, but can't find any good pics of the undeside of the sunroof opening. If I get a chance I'll take some tonight.
