I looked up some info in the manual. Fumes from the fuel tank are absorbed in the charcoal canistor. When the engine is running, air is sucked into the bottom of the canistor and further to the engine inlet sytem. The fresh air is supposed to purge the charcoal canistor of fuel vapors.
Is the line from the fuel tank tight on the canistor? Is the line from the fuel tank cracked anywhere? Is the hose which goes to the air cleaner tight?(maybe it needs a clamp).. Is the casing of the canistor cracked?
I looked at thesaabsite.com, and they had a 60k replacement recommendation.
Maybe the charcoal in the canistor is too saturated with fuel to be purged. Do you notice the fuel smell when the engine is off? I would think the smell would go away when the engine is running, as fresh air was being drawn through the canistor into the inlet of the engine.
thesaabsite still lists new charcoal canistors for 86-88 8V @$61. Maybe one can be retro-fitted to your application.....or get a used one from Tim Nines.
I've been wondering if one could be cracked open and the charcoal replaced?
Somehow pry the top off, replace the charcoal, then re-glue the top. I'll look into it some more. I think I have one in the basement I can play with.
