Oil is a hot topic, so here goes:
In my 1976, the tranny with the primary gears, the spec. is EP 75 API GL-5. I think in your case, the spec. may be 10W30 motor oil, or the above, but API GL-4 OR API GL-5. I think your spec. is less restrictive than mine, so you may have more options. In any case, I asked Red Line what would be a good gear oil for MY tranny. I also asked about issues putting in synthetic after 207,000 miles of wear. Following is Dave Granquist's reply:
"In your SAAB manual transaxle I would recommend the 75W90NS, this
will be a little higher viscsoity at low temperatures than a straight
75W, but should still offer reasonably good cold shiftability. I
wouldn't expect any issues using it, if seals and gaskets are in good
condition it should work well."
I asked about their Lightweight Gear Oil, and received this response:
"The LightWeight gear is about 40% lower viscsoity than the 75W90NS.
The LightWeight gear oil contains a friction modifier and the reason
I wouldn't recommend it in your transaxle, it likely would be too
slippery for the synchros. It is compatible with the synchros but
wouldn't necessarily offer the best shiftability.
If there was still a LightWeight NS, that would be a close match."
So the next logical question for you, which I can't answer, is which oil meets the 10W30 spec. for a transmission. I fear that many 10W30 oils have friction modifiers and would be too slippery.
Having said all that, I am running Castrol dino gear oil, EP 75 API GL-5 which I bought from the dealer in a 5 gallon container long ago. My car shifts fine. I am almost out of it, so I'm looking for an alternative. My 1986 9000 turbo has MTL in it (from the PO) and it grinds 2nd gear. I think MTL was too slippery for the synchros. I think Red Line, if correctly spec'd, would be a big improvement because if you look at the specs., it is superior to dino oil. I don't think it is hype.
