VintageRider;
Anything is possible!
Parts are getting harder and harder to find, so we have to be creative about sourcing parts. It's just a fact. If B20's dissapear (no big hearbreak), move on to an early B201 w/ a skinny dipstick and oilcap valvecover. Paint it like a B20 and few will know the difference : )
About the chain, tensioners and rails...
The B20 timing chain is soooo fat, I've rarely seen deep grooves. Generally (except on horribly abused engines), they stop wearing once the rollers contact the rails.
The upper rail has a small slot that allows one to adjust the chain tension for wear.
I made a special curved wrench just to reach in and work this bolt. Using a small lever, snug up the rail just a bit. Careful as too much will destroy the rubber on the rail.
Most of the wear in the system occurs in the chain and these are available
all day long from Tsubaki. Same chain as a Datsun L20B engine.
I've never replaced a timing gear.
Sometimes we have to make due w/ what we have...
