You can drill the old rivets to remove the molding, then just buy a stick on body side molding which will cover the holes.
If it was me, and I wanted to axe the moldings altogether, I would weld them shut and grind the weld flush, then use body fillers and primers to finish it.
You can also just use fillers to cover the holes and block it flat, it'll stick.
