Surface rust leads to rust holes, holes lead to leaks.
If you are seeing surface rust outside the seal, there is a good chance the rust started from under the seal and is working it's way out. That means you may already have rust holes under the seal.
Pulling the glass can be scary, especially considering good windshields are hard to find. Pull the lock strips and use a plastic tool(butter knife) to break the seal loose from the glass and also the body...all the way around....this applies to the inside of the seal too. If the butter knife won't work, try something else. If you use a metal tool and chip an edge of the windshield, the glass may crack. Stand outside the car with your hand through the window and apply pressure to the top corner of the glass, while pulling the seal back. The trick is to remove the glass, not the glass and seal. After you get the first upper corner free from the seal, the rest will come alot easier. Remove the whole top edge first, then work the sides, the bottom edge is last. This applies to both the front and back glass.
Installing it is another story which I won't get into. I pay a glass guy to install mine.
Painting with the glass out gives you two options. Paint the whole car with the glass out, then re-install the glass. Or paint around the openings, install the glass, then mask it off to paint the rest of the car. Either way, both jobs require alot of masking.
