Jimmy, I should've never doubted you. :-) It looks like I forgot to put that bushing back in to the shift lever housing when I reinstalled everything. So, after disassembling the whole bit, putting the bushing back where it's supposed to be, and trying to align things so the car actually starts, everything is good once again. I still don't understand how that bushing would affect engaging the gears, but I'm happy so long as it works.
Now, of course, when I removed the driver's seat to redo the bushing, one of those spring-loaded black plastic thingies under the back of the seat popped out. I'm trying to figure out how to get it back on. There's a metal clip ring around the black plastic that snaps onto the housing in the floor of the car. I can't really press down on the clip while pressing down on the black plastic, so I'm leaning towards compressing it with a block of wood and then hammering the ring down lightly. Or, perhaps once the seat's in and pressing on the black part, I can tap the snap ring into place. I'm wondering if it's really even necessary to have it.
