Two stroke question

I owned a '68 Saab with the two stroke many years ago ('73) and it's always bugged that I could never get the car to run right. I recall putting one quart of regular motor oil in a tank full of gas. Was that the right mixture? It always smoked like crazy and fouled spark plugs. Would it have run better if I'd used a two-stoke oil? I also seem to recall that at the time they used to sell a premix gas with oil already in it for two stroke outboard engines. Would that have been beter? I only had the car a short time and when a guy offered to trade even up for a TR4 I jumped at it. I still wish I could have found a way to make it work.
