Thanks again; the mystery behind these boxes are begining to dissolve. I do not believe that your theories are off; at least not by much. I thought of this myself in terms of the worn R and P. producing whine even after a rebuild.

I had rebuilt a box once, and the whine was so strong, that it sounded like a siren. ( I did not measure the backlash) After driving and driving, it eventually dissapeared. What I believe occurred, is that I overtightend the pinion nut. My mechanic at the time, showed me the "right feel" and I always thought that "right feel" was way too tight. It eventually wore( broke in) and walla.. not any more noise.

This is great to read of more Saab owners besides the experts rebuilding these boxes. Jack Lawrence seams to be the most thorough among the rebuilders; and seams to go outside the box. ( I never heard of smoothing the ring gear for noise. Yet what Bob mentioned above is true, and I thought of this myself. With all of the knowledge that Jack has, it is wonderful to share it.

I've spoken to Jack a number of times concerning other issues ( I bought many parts from him for a rebuild) and he is always demostrate patience, and you can hear the passion as he talks.
