They are not as bad as some of the posts have made out. Yes, carbs need adjustment but those on Saabs - especially of the vintage you are talking about are remarkably reliable and straight forward. The idea on these older cars is that there are three items that you need to have them run - spark, fuel and compression. If the engine does not run, it is usually very easy to analyze why because of these items which do not take fancy computers and tools to analyze (just try to do that on a FI car with its relays, computers, etc using only a few hand tools. I have driven cars with carbs for over 40 years from VWs to Volvos to Saabs to Mercedes and they are very easy to deal with. If you like the car and have some mechanical skill or are willing to learn, then go for it. These 96s are an absolute blast to drive and each one is unique.
