I'm guessing the engine would eventually shake apart without the balance shaft. Bearing can be bought from Northern Power Products (search this board for their number) or MSS or Chip Lamb. I'm surprised your machine shop can't find them since this engine was used also used as an industrial engine in fork lifts and pumps.
