I have never seen one for a 96 because the roof is to round. The roof line in a vw is about the same so the rack your friend has maybe a converted beetle rack. Now 95s did have a rack, their roofs are not as curved, so it could also be a modified one off a 95 or maybe some other wierd europen car.
