Welcome to the club, yes a little crazy.
First is to remember that a stock SAAB V4 is only 65 HP. souped up say 110.
An automatic is going to weigh more, create more heat (need cooler for trans) and normally loose in efficiency compared to a std. trans.
With around 20 LBS per HP, weight is important. So say you get this done to only weigh 100 LBS more, that is the same as a 5 HP loss.
Corvair and Subaru come to mind as the right orientation. The Corvair would have to be flipped to get it going in the right direction. I am not sure of rotation of Subie? but something to bear in mind when looking for auto trans.
No matter what you find it is going to be a LOT of custom work.
Seems much easier to teach the wife to drive a stick, if you use the freewheel you only need the clutch to start out.
It took my wife 5 years to learn, refused after her first brush with the side of the garage. 5 years later her automatic(72-99) broke down and she had a choice of not driving or driving one of my sticks, she learned real quick and never looked back. Now says she feels un safe in an automatic. Has driven almost exclusively SAAB's for the last 40 years all standard shift.
Good luck, RGS
