Drippy Transaxle drain plug

At some point in the past 45 years someone cranked the transaxle drain plug in my '67 96, to the extent that the threads are stretched. As I recall, the plugs were tapered to create a sort of interference fit. Does anyone have any experience or advice as to renewing the threads, or using some sort of sealant like teflon tape or similar? Thanks!
