I bought three bottles for my Quantum gear box Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 27 Jan 2021 16:34:18 In Reply to: Ravenol MTL-3 75w gear oil, Kane304 [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 25 Jan 2021 14:54:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Per Tom Donney, the current crop of gear oils are too viscous for these old boxes, and to stay with 80 weight oils, or lighter in winter. I assume his opinion is based upon seeing too many vintage gear boxes needing repairs.
I don't know if the oil you referenced is a GL-4 or GL-5. I bought the GL-4 Ravenol 75-80W because of an article in a Vintage Car magazine which stated the super-dooper Extreme Pressure additives used in the GL-5 oils are actually corrosive to the non-ferrous components of older gear boxes, therefore older transmissions should use the GL-4 lubes. Tom told me the new non-ferrous parts he installs are compatible with GL-5 oils.
All of this may be subjective, but it is the points I used when making my decision. Three liters is enough for an initial break-in fill after its current rebuild, and a subsequent Drain & Fill.
