Not odd at all - I know exactly how you feel.
If the car has been sitting for six or seven years, change the engine oil before you try to start the car. You don't want that old dirty oil, probably with a considerable amount of water in it from condensation, to circulate through the engine. Before trying to fire the engine, take the spark plugs out and squirt some 30W oil into the cylinders to lubricate the cylinders and pistons. Put the spark plugs back in, and either turn the engine by hand, or turn it with the starter WITHOUT connecting the spark plug wires. This will distribute the oil that you squirted into the cylinders. Cranking the engine with the starter for about 10 seconds is enough. Then connect the spark plug wires, and try to start the engine. When it fires, it will smoke like crazy because of the oil you put in the cylinders. This should clear out after a couple of minutes, and, unless the engine smoked before for some other reason, the exhaust should be clear. Let the engine idle for a while - you don't want to put a load on it while it is still cold; let it get used to being "alive" again.
Other fluids should also be changed (coolant, trans oil, brake fluid), but this does not have to be done before you get the engine running.
