What to look for in a vintage Saab?

Hello all-
I am thinking about getting myself a vintage Saab some time within the next few years. I'd like to start my research now. I would basically be buying a car to supplement my 87 900 turbo - a fun, summer car, but one that I could take trips with if I wanted to.
So far, 96's seem most appealing. I don't know much about them other than the fact that they came with the 3-cylender, 2-stroke until the mid or late 60's, and the v4 after that. Can anyone provide me with more detailed info as to the changes over the years?
Also, do I want a 2-stroker or a v4? I've been leaning towards the v4, but I really couldn't list pro's/con's of either. Can anyone out there clarify the advantages and disadvantages of the two engines?
Lastly, the world-famous question: what should I look for in a 96? What are the typical problems with the different variants? Most likely, I'll be buying from far away - I've never seen a 96 where I live (upstate NY, Ithaca/Syracuse area) so I'd like to know what I should ask before making a trip to see a car.
Thanks in advance for any advice. If owning a vintage Saab is anything like owning my 900, then I already know I'm in for a treat.
