Although the manual simply calls for SAE 80 EP (extreme pressure) gear oil, generic oils meeting this exact spec can be hard/inconvenient to find. I'd be concerned about using ANY heavier oil -- the bearings on the upper shaft depend on oil getting flung around for lubrication, and if the oil is too heavy it won't "fling" far enough.
One oil that's fairly easy to find and works well for a lot of us is Red Line MTL (Manual Transmission Lubricant.) This brand meets the specs and is readily available in speed and performance shops. Make sure you get the "flavor" intended for synchromesh, as Red Line also has another transmission lubricant for non-synchro racing gearboxes and store people might get them mixed up and try to sell you the wrong one.
