I'm more familiar with this on 96es and Sonetts, but one thing that can cause it on those is a bad connection in the instrument-panel wiring. The problem on my car was the common ground connection for the warning lights. Vague, voodoo explanation: The alternator light, which is just on the threshold of flickering at idle, couldn't get to ground, so instead was grounding itself through the other lights, making THEM flicker instead. When I'd speed up the engine, the alternator light was no longer on the threshold of flickering, so the other lights would behave.
Not very scientific, I know. But at any rate, once I cleaned all the wire connections and bulb sockets, the problem went away.
