Hi Carlin, couple of things you could do: If there is any fluid in your spare, drain it and see what it looks like and what comes out with it. If not, put some in and stir it around and drain it etc. Spin the input shaft and shift through the gears and see what it feels like--this is a pretty seat-of-the-pants check, but should at least alert you to a broken gear or similar severe damage. If you have spare drivers stick them in the output holes so an assistant can hold them lightly to apply a little load, this will improve the value of the spin check. Last, pop the top cover where the selector rod goes in and take the unit to a tranny shop for somebody with an experienced eye to look at the gears, you can't see everything but you might see enough to say either "this looks good, go for it" or "this looks like it has problems, don't bother." Stages of gear wear that an expert can discern, that would indicate high wear or likely noise problems, may not be evident to you.
