You can take up the chain slack in two ways. The best way is to remove the engine and replace the whole setup (chain,tensioner, guides). You can make minor adjustments with the engine in the vehicle. Remove the valve cover and rotate the engine by hand until there is more slack on the top half of the timing chain than on the bottom half. Between the top chain sprocket and the head is the upper chain guide. A small crowbar can be used to pry down the chain guide, thereby removing slack from the chain. Is is best to only move the guide about one quarter inch, which will produce noticable results.
