I've modified my '66 Monte Carlo, through porting and I'm happy with the results - I just have to keep the rev's up there to get it moving from a stop and once above 3,000 RPM, I can climb almost any steep hill and hold 65 to 70mph without falling off.
A great book for understanding 2-stroke principles is "Performance Tuning in Theory & Practice Two Strokes" by A.Graham Bell. It was published by HAYNES in '83 and republished up until '89 when I bought it. It's very technical and covers everything including common mistakes that can lead to an overtuned engine great for one run/race! :( :( Also, along the lines of what Dave Westlake suggested, I found it in a high-end snowmobile shop. Good luck tuning, because as we all know, they are either the most exhilerating of engines when running sweetly or can cause the most heartbreak when they let go!!!
