...suggestion. I wrestled with those points for years in my sonetts and in all my early 99s. When bud Clark keyed me in to the pertronix system, I took his advice and my cars instantly smoothed out completely. On my most recent upgrade, in a sonett, I had the car tuned completely and still had the same problem of a rough idle and more than usual fuel consumption. I was told by the shop that my distributor was bad and that my carburator could use replacing as well. They adjusted my idle to about 950rpms and the next day when I put in the pertronix, that instantly jumped to around 2000rpm...that was how much fuel and what not wasn't getting fired right. The car stopped "chugging" at full throttle and even when cruising. THe fuel econ. went way up and so did the power.
Anyhow, I get mine for around 58.00 buck from the local VW shop (bugs use the same part #). it takes about 15 minutes to put in and is a no brainer to do. If you still decide that you want to have the distibutor rebuilt, there are a few sponsors here that can help you. I have always used High Test Rebuilders in Santana, CA there number is 1.800.347.6999
Good luck
