The chain should rest slightly on the lower guide. If the chain is very worn and the tensioner is at the end of its adjustment, then you may notice slack on one end of the chain possibly accompanied by a fair amount of chain rattle. It is also possible that the tensioner is "between clicks" resulting is a slightly loose chain. Measuring the tensioner is easy... pull the valve cover and use a long ruler to measure the position of the tensioner relative to the head. There are instructions on Townsend Imports website that detail how to measure the tensioner, the specs and how to adjust it if "between clicks" by adjusting the upper guide. Linked below. Good luck.
